New Castle’s playoff hopes still alive
Feb 08, 2010

The New Castle High boys basketball team continues to cling to playoff life.

The effects of heavy snowfall that swept across the area Friday was enough to postpone the Center at New Castle boys basketball game Saturday. It was the second straight day the game was postponed. The game was rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.

By the time the Red Hurricane plays the Trojans, a playoff berth may already have been decided.

New Castle (3-7 section, 4-14 overall) remains in fifth place in the WPIAL Section 2-AAA standings, a game behind Ambridge (4-6, 10-8) for the final playoff berth in the loop. The Red Hurricane travels to Youngstown (Ohio) Ursuline at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in nonsection action. If the Bridgers top Beaver (0-11, 2-17) tomorrow on the Bobcats’ floor, the ’Canes will be eliminated from the postseason by virtue of Ambridge’s season sweep of New Castle.

Ambridge claimed a 48-44 victory over Beaver in the first meeting.

New Castle must beat both Center and Ellwood City Lincoln (3-7, 7-12) and have Ambridge lose to Beaver and Blackhawk to secure a playoff spot. If the Wolverines beat Center and New Castle and finish tied with Ambridge in the section, Ellwood City and the Bridgers would both qualify for the WPIAL playoffs because of a series split.

Beaver (0-11, 2-17) is the only Section 2-AAA team eliminated from the playoff race.
