Shane Wagner's crazy 3

Shane Wagner’s crazy three-pointer

A ball that got away from Shane Wagner in the final seconds of a Jan. 21, 2009, game turned into one of the greatest basketball plays of his life.

“I got a pick at the top of the key, but I dribbled off my knee and the ball was rolling toward the sideline,” said Wagner, now a junior on the Ashland University baseball team.

Wagner didn’t look at the basket because he was checking his feet to make sure they were inbounds when he recovered the ball.

“I got it and just threw it toward the hoop so somebody could catch it and put up a shot.”

No need to worry.

Wagner looked up just in time to see the ball hit the backboard and drop into the basket, breaking a tie and giving Wilmington a three-point lead over Shenango with three seconds left.

“People in the stands came running onto the court,” Wagner recalled. “But there was still time on the clock so they had to go back to their seats.”

Shenango took a time out but was unable to match Wagner’s magic.

Wagner admitted he practiced tough shots in case he ever had to take one in a game.

“But I always got to look at the basket.”
