Lincoln Park (85) Vs. Union (49)
Feb 05, 2014
The Scotties led 13-8 after one quarter before the Leopards rallied for a Section 1-A victory.
Lincoln Park outscored visiting Union in the second quarter, 33-12, for a 41-25 lead at the break.
“We came out with a lot of energy and we hit some shots early,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “Defensively, we played them pretty hard in the first quarter and we were feeling good.
“But you knew they were going to make a run. They picked up their pressure a little bit and it bothered us.”
The Leopards are ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Post-Gazette and No. 1 in the state.
Benjamin Young netted 12 points with five rebounds and five assists to lead the Scotties (4-5, 8-12).
The Leopards’ Maverick Rowan led all scorers with 39 points, 31 of which came in the second and third quarters.
“You can’t give Rowan an inch,” Smialowski said. “You can’t give him any kind of distance; he’s a tough guard.”
Union closes section play at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Rochester (0-9, 3-16). A win for the Scotties, coupled with a victory by Lincoln Park over Western Beaver (5-4, 13-5) would force a tie between the Scotties and Golden Beavers for third place in the section. The teams split the season series.
“That would be great for us,” Smialowski said of possibly tying for third.
