Wilmington (48) Vs. Laurel (35)
Dec 29, 2010
The Lady Greyhounds advanced to the Union Booster Tournament championship with a triumph over Laurel.
Wilmington grabbed a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and clung to a 23-21 halftime margin.
The Lady Spartans tied the contest at 23 early in the third quarter, but could not take control. The Lady Greyhounds went on a 16-5 run to close the third and posted a 39-28 advantage.
“I asked them to step up defensively because that’s where it’s at for us,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “We take good shots, but we don’t make a lot of shots, so we have to get turnovers and steals defensively. I asked them to step up and they did. I am proud of them.”
Laurel (2-4) was unable to cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter and settled for the 13-point loss.
Julie Burns led the Lady Greyhounds with 14 points. Haley Marett added 12 and Mackenzie Hiers had 10.
Becca Kerr tallied a game-high 19 points for the Lady Spartans.
“Kerr played great for us. She shot really well from the outside — 14 of her points came in the first half,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “We were poor from the foul line. My girls tried the whole game. They played with heart, but they need to put it together for 32 minutes.”
