Union (56) Vs. OLSH (58)
Jan 30, 2014
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Cameron Johnson hit a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds left to hand the Scotties a heartbreaking Section 1-A home loss.
Union (3-4, 7-11) forced OLSH (6-1, 14-4) into a missed shot with about 40 seconds left and were setting up for the final shot when Johnson forced a turnover.
The Scotties were forced to foul Johnson, who finished with a team-high 26 points, setting up his two freebies. Union’s Jacob Jendrysik was able to get a 3-pointer off at the buzzer, but it didn’t find the bottom of the net.
“They defended our final set well,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “I told the kids after the game that this would be a tough pill to swallow and that it’d sting for a little bit. We played against a very good team and we played them hard. This shows we can play with anybody.”
OLSH took a 38-29 lead into the break, but closed the gap to three entering the final quarter.
“We played hard and were down nine at the half,” Smialowski said. “I was really happy with how they responded in the second half. We made some defensive adjustments in the second half on Cameron Johnson, but it wasn’t anything major.
“The effort was there in the first half, but the shots just started to fall in the second half for us.”
Benjamin Young led the Scotties with a game-high 27 points and added seven rebounds and six assists. Jendrysik chipped in with 11 points, while Anthony Rush and Jullian Johnson chipped in eight and seven.
“Ben played really well tonight,” Smialowski said. “He was attacking the basket. The other kids stepped up and hit some shots. The more they do that the more heat it takes off Ben and opens things up for everyone.”
