Wilmington edges Sharpsville
Wilmington (44) Vs. Sharpsville (42)
Jan 30, 2014
Jordan Smith knocked down two free throws with four seconds left to hand the visiting Greyhounds the District 10, Region 2-AA victory.
Wilmington (5-2, 10-7) ran off most of the final 40 seconds of the game before using a ball screen to get Smith open. Smith was able to get the ball to the basket before being fouled as he was trying to shoot.
“Coming off two league losses, it’s nice to get this win,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “He showed his senior leadership by stepping to the line and calmly making those free throws.”
Wilmington took an eight-point lead into the second half, but managed just four points in the third quarter.
“That was more us,” said Jeckavitch, who noted his club held the ball for nearly three minutes in the third quarter. “They sat in a 3-2 zone. We figured if that was the route they were going to go then we’d just hold the ball and make them come guard us.”
Smith finished with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Travis Brumbaugh added seven points and four assists. Jesse Hilliard tacked on six assists and six rebounds.
