Lady Wildcats top Union
Shenango (48) Vs. Union (20)
Jan 30, 2014
The host Lady Wildcats limited the Lady Scots to single digits in all four quarters to post the nonsection win.
Union (3-13) managed just five points in the first half and scored 15 in the second half.
“We just got off to a slow start,” Union coach Larry Ondako said. “We got good looks. We just couldn’t make a hoop. We struggled to make anything. It looked like we hadn’t played a game in a week. Everyone has been dealing with the weather, but we can’t take days off and come in ready to play a basketball game. We need the practice time.
“We were able to get some shooting in at halftime. We made some shots in the second half and did a little better.”
Shenango (10-7) wanted to force the Lady Scots into long-range shots.
“We tried to mix defenses up,” Lady ’Cats coach Brian Turk said. “They got a lot of shots and fortunately for us, they didn’t go in. We needed to get out on the shooter better. We wanted to keep them out of the paint and let them fire away from the outside.”
Carolyn Peterson tossed in a season-high 18 points for the winners, while Samantha Seaburn added 10 points, three steals, three blocks and three assists. Angelina Sibeto checked in with eight points, five assists and four steals.
“We wanted to make sure we played really well and build up some confidence going into (today’s) game with Beaver Falls,” Turk said. “We wanted to be sharp for that. It was good to see the girls come out ready to go.
“We got the ball inside more. One of the things we’ve been trying to preach as the season’s gone on is to be patient. We want to get great shots instead of good shots.”
Christina Noble led Union with eight points.
