Haswell helps Lancers to win
Neshannock (70) Vs. Rochester (60)
Dec 29, 2011
Tyler Haswell’s 14 points and 19 rebounds helped the Lancers hold off the Rams in a nonsection home battle.
Neshannock (3-3) struggled to contain hot-shooting Rochester (0-8) in the first half as the guests connected on six of its eight 3-pointers. The Lancers clung to a 40-38 halftime lead. However, the hosts shut the door in the fourth quarter to take the win.
“Defensively, I wasn’t happy with the way we were playing. We gave up 38 points in the first half to a team that was averaging just 42 per game. I didn’t expect them to shoot the ball as well as they did, though,” Neshannock coach John Corey said. “Defensively, we were not playing well enough to respond to that and make those shots more difficult. We gave up 22 points in the second half and we did a better job of stopping their shooters.”
With forward Joe Iorio out with a dislocated elbow, Haswell, a sophomore, helped fill the void in the paint off the bench. He added four assists.
“I thought he played really well,” Corey said. “For being a sophomore, this was really the first time he has had a large amount of varsity minutes.”
Ernie Burkes scored a game-high 25 points for Neshannock, while John Sansone had 21 points, four rebounds and four assists.
