Laurel shocks Shenango for first win
Laurel (48) Vs. Shenango (47)
Dec 29, 2011
The Spartans clung to a one-point lead in the final minute and held on for the victory at the Union Boosters Tournament.

Laurel (1-6), which avenged a 57-22 loss to the Wildcats on Dec. 16, faced a quick 8-0 deficit. However, the Spartans rebounded to trim the deficit to 11-8 at the end of the first. Laurel continued its momentum in the second to post a 22-19 halftime lead.

The Spartans won the third quarter, 16-13, to push their advantage to 38-32. They held off a Shenango charge late in the game. Laurel had a chance to increase its lead with around 40 seconds to play. However, the Spartans failed to convert a free throw. The ’Cats (6-2) had a shot to take the lead, but missed. Laurel rebounded and missed another free throw in the waning seconds, but Shenango was unable to capitalize once again.

“The first time we played them, we were really almost embarrassed by the way we played. Shenango is an outstanding team, but we knew we could play better than that,” Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said. “The kids played hard and they went out and competed for four quarters.

“It’s only one game, and hopefully we’ll learn from this. We have to compete for four quarters, and this the first time we’ve done that. Hopefully, they’ll realize that if you compete for four quarters, you have a chance to win.”

Todd Fennick led the Spartans with 13 points. Conor Melichar netted 11 points and six rebounds, while Rick Jones had nine points and six rebounds.

Jeff Williams tallied a game-high 14 points for the ’Cats. Jordan O’Hara had 11 points, while Brett Chieze had four points, five assists and five rebounds.
