Lady ’Canes rally for victory
New Castle (57) Vs. Chartiers Valley (51)
Dec 29, 2011
Kaylynn Waters started what she finished against Chartiers Valley, and it led to a comeback victory for the Lady ’Canes.
The senior scored New Castle’s first 13 points, but Chartiers Valley (3-2) made five of its first eight 3-pointers and only committed four turnovers in the first half of the Bethel Park Holiday Tournament. The Lady Colts led, 33-25, at the break and were up by as much as 13 in the third quarter before New Castle (4-2) rallied for a 15-8 run.
“The biggest thing is they got fatigued,” Lady ’Canes coach Jason Rankin said of Chartiers Valley. “We forced 16 turnovers in the second half, and a lot of that was because they couldn’t get up and down the court. They missed their last nine 3-pointers, too. Once we actually started pressuring and using some half-court traps, fatigue set in.”
Waters, who netted a game-high 35 points, led the late charge. She scored New Castle’s last seven points and added 10 rebounds and five steals. Two of the steals came in the fourth quarter, helping spark a run in which the Lady ’Canes outscored Chartiers Valley, 17-5.
“This was her best overall game,” Rankin said. “She shot 14 of 24 for the game and had some key steals. Being the player she is, she’s still mad she missed a left-handed layup.”
Christina Talbert added 14 points and seven assists for New Castle. The Lady ’Canes play Bethel Park at 3 p.m. today in the championship game.
