Union claims top spot in Section 1-A
Union (56) Vs. Vincentian (50)
Dec 18, 2007
The Union High boys basketball team took over the top slot in WPIAL Section 1-A last night.
Thanks to a 56-50 victory at Vincentian Academy and Lincoln Park’s loss to Monaca, the Scotties own sole possession of first place.
“Tonight was a big win,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “Anytime you go on the road, you’re facing adversity. But we pulled away in the fourth quarter by going with a zone. Our defense seemed to slow them down.”
The Scotties (4-0 section, 5-2 overall) led 31-29 at the half, and matched the Royals (0-4, 7-0) with 12 points in the third before taking a 13-9 advantage in the fourth.
Anthony Thomas led all scorers with 17 with eight of those in the fourth quarter.
Jason Burkes followed with 16 markers, including four 3-pointers. Jordan Clingensmith chipped in with 11 points, sinking three from 3-point range. Clingensmith also had five rebounds.
Matt Adamo led the rebounding effort with eight boards and Jordon Rooney had five assists.
Mike Molnar led Vincentian Academy with 15 points.
