Lady 'Canes stop McDowell
New Castle (70) Vs. Erie McDowell (62)
Dec 31, 2010
A little defensive pressure went a long way for New Castle in its consolation round victory at the Erie McDowell Holiday Tournament.
The Lady ’Canes trailed Erie McDowell, 17-8, after the first quarter. New Castle (4-2) only made two shots in the quarter, which inhibited the Lady ’Canes from setting up their press defense. That changed in the second quarter.
“We were able to get some baskets, set up the press and set the tempo,” New Castle coach Jason Rankin said. “We started running from there. They were up 26-17 with about 3:30 to go, and we made a huge 17-4 run to take the lead.”
LaShauna Brothers scored 14 of her game-high 27 in the second quarter. She also corralled eight rebounds. The Lady ’Canes kept the momentum in the third, outscoring Erie McDowell 23-10.
Christina Talbert added 21 points and six assists, and Ja’Nia McPhatter netted 15 and grabbed eight boards. Maddie Hahesy led the Lady Trojans (2-4) with 20 points.
