Shenango went to the free throw line early and often in a 57-47 Section 2-AA victory over New Brighton.
Shenango (2-4, 3-7) made 8-of-9 freebies in the first quarter and connected on 21 of 34 for the night.
“We got to the line 34 times (last) night,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “The guys did a good job of driving to the basket and getting fouled. We did a better job of getting to the rim and not settling for a 3-pointer. When the guys saw an open lane, they were getting to the basket.”
The ’Cats jumped out to a 23-8 lead and extended it to 34-16 at the break.
“We had a hot start right off the bat,” McQuiston said. “The kids were up for the game. I really feel when we play hard, we’re a good team. We always say the first three or four minutes of the game and the first three or four minutes of the second half are really important. We really stepped up and got off to a good start. Our defense stepped up and guys were able to get to the line.”
New Brighton (1-5, 4-8) battled back and was able to outscore the ’Cats 31-23 over the final two quarters.
“We needed this after that loss to Laurel (Wednesday),” McQuiston said. “I keep telling the guys that its a long season. We needed this win to keep pace in the section.”
Brenton Booher led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds, while James Micco registered 11 points and eight boards.
“I thought Brenton had the best game of his career tonight,” McQuiston said. “He usually hits a couple of threes every game, but he didn’t tonight. He did exactly what we wanted him to do. He got to the rim and was able to get some rebounds, too.
“Micco is coming on strong. He’s been really consistent for us. He’s becoming a force in the paint and is doing a nice job on the boards. He can be a double-double guy every night.”
