Lady 'Cats nearly pull upset
New Brighton (46) Vs. Shenango (40)
Jan 25, 2011
A scoring lull in the third quarter cost Shenango in its upset bid of New Brighton in Section 2-AA action.
Shenango trailed by one after the second quarter, but the Lady Wildcats (0-8, 2-14) scored just four points in the third period and couldn’t quite complete a fourth-quarter rally.
“We went almost six or seven minutes without scoring in that third period,” Shenango coach Brian Turk said. “If we could have just scored in that period, the game was within reach. We committed a few turnovers at the end of the second quarter, and instead of being up five or six, we were down one. Then we came out in the third period and didn’t score.”
Amanda Herb led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points. Kaitlyn Hopkins paced New Brighton (5-3, 6-9) with 11.
“We’re learning how to play together and compete, and instead of getting beat by 20 or 30, we turn around and show we can play with some of these teams,” Turk said. “That’s part of the learning process.”
