Laurel girls ride hot shooting
Laurel (59) Vs. New Brighton (41)
Dec 19, 2014
The Lady Spartans had three players score in double digits in their Section 1-AA win over visiting New Brighton.
Ellen Shaffer and Kristin Dicks had 17 points each for Laurel (1-2, 3-4), while Diana Pontius followed with 15 points of her own. Shaffer added 12 rebounds and three blocks to her night.
New Brighton (0-2, 0-5), which only used six players, was at a disadvantage from the start. It showed as Laurel jumped out to a 28-9 lead in the first half.
“Our shooting was more on tonight,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “With six girls, they’re basically forced into a zone and that allowed us to hit shots. They were falling for us tonight.”
Starter Nicole Wade sat out of last night’s game and sixth man Megan Reeher was sidelined in the second quarter, both with injuries. But Laurel’s depth was able to withstand a second half where the Lady Lions started to show more fight.
“We’re still battling some injuries,” Shevitz said. “But our younger players have stepped up and played well.”
