New Castle remains unbeaten
New Castle (76) Vs. Pine-Richland (59)
Jan 23, 2013
New Castle High continues to stand alone.

The Red Hurricane remained the lone remaining boys basketball team in the WPIAL with a 76-59 WPIAL Section 3-AAAA victory at Pine-Richland last night.

New Castle led 44-34 at the half and bore down defensively after intermission.

“We certainly had a much better second half,” ’Canes coach Ralph Blundo said. “Pine-Richland scored way too many points against us in the first half.

“I thought we played with better energy and focus in the second half. They shot it well in the first half and exposed our lack of energy.”

New Castle (9-0 section, 16-0 overall), ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL in Class AAAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, won its 40th straight regular season game.

Shawn Anderson drained a game-high 23 points for the ’Canes and Brandon Domenick was next with 15. Anthony Richards added 13.

New Castle made eight 3-pointers.

“Shawn was Shawn. He held it together early,” Blundo said of Anderson. “Shawn, Brandon and Anthony all made some big 3s for us.”

Dean Steliotes tossed in 22 points to lead the Rams (1-8, 8-8).

The ’Canes are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against section foe North Hills (2-7, 6-10).
