Tyler Haswell made sure the Neshannock High boys basketball team rebounded from a rocky start last night.
Haswell collected a game-high 26 rebounds to go with his 19 points, rallying the Lancers from a 14-point second-quarter deficit en route to a 66-57 WPIAL Section 2-AA home win over Aliquippa.
Neshannock (3-1 section, 9-1 overall) trailed 27-13 midway through the second quarter before settling for a 29-25 deficit at the break.
“This is a great win for us; it’s a good section win,” Lancers coach John Corey said. “The way we went about it, I wasn’t very happy with things early on.
“We weren’t playing very good basketball. Our message at that point was to get it down to a one-possession game at the half. We did a good job battling back. It wasn’t quite one possession, but it was close.”
Corey said Haswell came in averaging about seven rebounds a game. Neshannock outrebounded the Quips, 46-32.
“For Haswell to come out and perform that well on the boards was huge,” Corey said. “To more than triple the average, that’s a great performance and one that we needed.”
Matt McKinney netted a team-high 21 points for Neshannock, including 11 in the third quarter. He was 7 of 9 from the field.
“McKinney had a very quiet 21 for us,” Corey said. “He’s known for his three-point shooting ability and he only had one. That speaks volumes that he was able to get to the rim.
“It will be very important for us for Matt to evolve into more than just a shooter. That maturation is definitely occurring, too.”
Ernie Burkes was next for the Lancers with 12 points and Matt Seltzer added 10.
Malik Stewart led Aliquippa (2-2, 2-5) with 16 markers.
