Lady Greyhounds roll to win
Wilmington (45) Vs. Lakeview (23)
Jan 04, 2013
Tessa Sikora’s double-double steered Wilmington to its first region triumph against Lakeview at home.
“She’s become pretty strong,” Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford said. “She’s tall and very lanky. She’s really taking control of her body and being strong on the ball. Thus far, she’s been the most consistent player for our team. That’s huge for her and for us.”
Sikora finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She has averaged 11 points a game this season. Sarah Slonaker contributed nine points and Carly Christofferson was next with eight.
Wilmington (1-1, 2-7) picked up a much-needed win in what Sanford called her team’s best performance this season.
“We did it for four quarters for a change,” she said. “Just for team morale and confidence, to know that it’s possible to do it, it’s tremendously important. Nobody plays a sport to lose. It’s tough to go out and play so many games and not win.”
The Lady ’Hounds came through defensively, holding Lakeview to 12 points through the first three quarters.
“Sometimes the girls rely too much on help when playing zones,” Sanford said. “We have to tell them move their feet. They haven’t done it in the past, they did this game. It made a huge difference.”
