Union girls edge Cornell
Union (50) Vs. Cornell (44)
Jan 04, 2013
Adjustments at halftime propelled Union to a key Section 1-AA win against visiting Cornell.
The Lady Scots were stagnant out of the gate, producing six points in the first quarter against the Lady Raiders.
“They went to a triangle-and-two in the first half. It was defense we haven’t worked against much this year,” Union coach Brian Fadden said. “We didn’t know what to do. As the game progressed, we focused on attacking them more with the dribble and keeping the ball moving.”
Miranda Heaney racked up 18 points in a typical performance for Union’s leading scorer. However, Fadden believes it was the contributions from lesser known scorers, Tyanna Harris and Kaylee Lemmon, that put the team over the top.
“As the game progressed, we got everyone involved,” he said. “We know what Miranda and (her sister) Marissa Heaney can do. All the other players are capable of scoring. Tyanna and Kaylee scored some big points. They realized they were open, took the shots and made them. If you have five threats on the floor, it’s a lot harder to guard.”
Harris and Lemmon each scored 10 points, both season-highs. Marissa Heaney was next with nine.
Union (3-1, 6-4) is now 2-0 in home section games this season.
“It was huge for us,” Fadden said. “When you’re competing for a playoff spot, you have to win section games at home.”
