Feb 01, 2011
The Shenango High girls basketball team came through when it mattered most last night.
The Lady Wildcats were 10 of 16 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to secure a 42-31 nonsection win over Union.
Shenango (3-15) was just 13 of 26 from the foul line for the game. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak.
“I thought the girls did a real nice job down the stretch,” Lady Wildcats coach Brian Turk said. “We really had to step it up in the second half and get to the basket.
“We’ve been talking about it all year long. Sooner or later you’re going to win or lose a game at the foul line and tonight we won one.”
Lauren Pruchnic netted 11 of her game-high 13 points in the pivotal fourth frame. Briana Ferrucci was next with nine. Brianne Keyser snared a game-best 10 rebounds for Shenango and Amanda Herb added nine.
Miranda Heaney paced Union (3-15) with 11 markers and Savannah Partridge contributed nine.
“Once we got behind, we started fouling,” Lady Scots coach Brian Fadden said. “They were able to knock down their foul shots in that last quarter.”
