Feb 16, 2010
Union built positive momentum for the WPIAL playoffs with a Section 1-A win over Western Beaver.
The Scotties (4-4, 14-5) were coming off a 58-54 loss to Neshannock on Friday.
“We lost a tough one to Neshannock and we wanted to end up on a good note before the postseason began,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “It’s a nice way to get into the playoffs.”
The Scotties’ win clinches a playoff berth for Monaca (1-7, 4-16), which tied Western Beaver (1-7, 7-9) for fourth place. All five teams in the section secured a playoff berth.
Anthony Thomas poured in a game-high 27 points on 10-of-21 shooting. He was 7 of 10 from behind the arc.
“Anthony really shot it well,” Smialowski said. “He was taking some deep ones and they were going in.
“We really need that from him from here on out.”
Devonta Thomas followed with 13 points for the Scotties and Damian Trott added 12. Nate Major snared a team-best eight rebounds.
Union was 13 of 25 from behind the arc.
Brandon Barnes tossed in 14 points to lead the Golden Beavers.
