The Wilmington High girls basketball team bolstered its case for a postseason berth Saturday.
Ashley Gardner netted 16 points to lead the Lady Greyhounds to a 51-35 District 10, Region 2-AA win over West Middlesex.
Wilmington (4-3 region, 9-6 overall) sits in a tie for third place with Mercer (4-3, 8-7) in the region. District 10 takes two teams from each region with some regions sending as many as three.
Greenville (8-0, 15-2) paces the region, while Sharpsville (6-2, 11-5) is in second place.
The Lady Greyhounds took charge by outscoring the Ms. Reds 18-9 in the second quarter for a 30-19 halftime advantage.
“This was a big win for us,” Wilmington coach Brian Turk said. “You never know if District 10 will take two or three teams so you want to try and climb as high as you can.”
Julie Burns contributed 12 markers and 19 rebounds for the Lady Greyhounds, while Stephanie Kish tossed in 11 points. Mackenzie Hiers registered 11 boards and six assists for the victors.
“Julie Burns has really been hitting the boards well,” Turk said. “Mackenzie played a really solid game, too.”
Maddie Williams paced West Middlesex (3-5, 6-10) with 14 points.
