Ellwood City (54) Vs. Laurel (51)
Feb 01, 2010
Ellwood City Lincoln rallied from a halftime deficit and survived for a nonsection win.
“We were fortunate to get out of there with a win,” Lady Wolverines coach Bill Gottuso said. “The win gives us the confidence to know we can play with teams not in our section.”
Nicole Nocera paced Ellwood City (6-9) with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Nocera added five rebounds, four steals and three assists as well, while netting 12 of her points in the first half.
The Lady Wolverines trailed 22-15 at the break.
“Nicole just played a really solid all-around game,” Gottuso said. “She kept us in the game in the first half until we finally started making some shots.”
Nicole’s sister Michelle bucketed 11 markers with 11 boards for the Lady Wolverines.
Becca Kerr tallied a game-best 22 markers for the Lady Spartans (7-9).
Laurel committed 32 turnovers and was outscored 20-10 in the third quarter.
“I thought we played pretty hard, we just turned the ball over too many times,” Laurel coach Jenn McGarrah said. “Ellwood City had a strong third quarter and they really capitalized on our turnovers.”
The Lady Spartans (4-5 section) return to action at 7 p.m. today when they host Mohawk (4-3, 12-5) in a crucial WPIAL Section 2-AA encounter. The Lady Warriors hold the final playoff spot in the section.
