Shenango (58) Vs. West Middlesex (40)
Dec 08, 2007
The Shenango High boys basketball team concluded a rough stretch in style on Saturday.
Rich Gaston netted 22 points to lead the Wildcats to a 58-40 decision over West Middlesex in a nonsection matchup.
It was the seventh game in nine days for Shenango (5-2).
“We’re real happy with the way we started,” Wildcats coach Bob McQuiston said. “When you play that many games in that short of amount of time, you know fatigue is going to be a factor but it didn’t seem to bother us.
“We had some tough games in there, every game was close.”
The contest was a rematch of the season opener, which was won by Shenango, 54-50.
That matchup occurred in the first round of the Neshannock Tipoff Tournament.
Gaston also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds as well. Mike Murcko added 15 markers, while Bryan Chieze recorded 10 points and five assists.
Andrew Watson handed out a team-best nine assists.
The Big Reds scored 18 of their 40 points in the first quarter before Shenango’s defense tightened up.
“We played hard all four quarters,” McQuiston said. “We stepped it up in the second half on defense; I thought we really played well.”
Matt Murray led West Middlesex with 11 points.
