Hickory routs Wilmington boys
Hickory (47) Vs. Wilmington (30)
Jan 19, 2008
The offense was hiding in the second half on Saturday for the Wilmington High boys basketball team.

The Greyhounds managed just eight points in the final 16 minutes in a 47-30 loss to Hickory in a District 10 nonregion contest.

Wilmington (8-9) led 22-19 at halftime before being outscored 28-8 in the second half.

“I was happy with our defensive effort except for the third quarter,” Greyhounds Will Harris said. “Hickory has a very good defensive team and the score showed it.

“We got the ball inside and hit some outside shots in the second quarter. But outside of that, we couldn’t get going.”

Jake DeMedal netted a team-high 10 points for Wilmington.

The Hornets (12-7), coached by former Greyhounds bench boss Nick Cannone, was led by David Lumpp with a game-best 15 markers.

Harris feels the matchup against Hickory, a Class AAA school, will benefit his squad the rest of the way as the Greyhounds make a playoff push.

“It was a good nonleague test to get us going down the stretch,” Harris said. “Playing higher competition is always good to get you going.”
