The Mohawk High girls basketball team won the championship of the first Mohawk Holiday Tournament, 32-31 over Mars on Wednesday night.

Aliya Gage scored seven points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Erin Giancola, who scored eight points in the title game, also was named to the all-tourney team.

Coach Mike O’Lare said he was happy that his Mohawk team (8-1) was able to pull off the win in the low-scoring game.

“Both teams played very well defensively, so as a result both teams struggled on offense,” he said. “We just went back and forth, nobody could pull away.

“But our goal was to get to the finals and win it, so we’re very happy.”
