The Scotties outscored the Raiders 16-8 in the pivotal final period to
capture a 51-43 Section 1-A home win.
Union (2-0, 3-3) held a 28-21 halftime lead before Cornell (1-1, 1-5) knotted the count at 35 heading to the final frame.
"It was an ugly game," Scotties coach Mark Stanley said. "We came out of the gate hot, then we went cold.
"Cornell is very athletic. They outhustled us in a lot of areas, but we were able to pull it out in the end. We have to get better. If we play like this, someone could knock us off."
Garrison Bell garnered a team-high 16 points for Union and Joey Crivelli collected 12. Constantin Padure pulled down a team-best nine rebounds and Bell snared seven.
But Stanley noted Jordan Best had a big role in his team delivering down the stretch. Best scored all seven of his markers in the final stanza.
"Jordan Best picked us up in the fourth quarter," Stanley said. "He had a couple of key rebounds, hit three free throws. He was just big for us in the fourth quarter."
Blake Lipke netted 14 points for Cornell.
