Jan 27, 2014
The Lady Wolverines outscored the host Lady Spartans 20-7 in the second quarter to rally for a nonsection victory.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Ellwood City Lincoln (6-13).
“This was our third game in a row, and all have been on the road, and we lost the past two (on the road). So, this win was very much needed,” said first-year Lady Wolverines coach Dena Noble.
Emily Brown paced Ellwood with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She added five steals, while draining four 3-pointers.
“Emily Brown really stepped us for us (Saturday),” Noble said.
Karington Ketterer was next for the winners with 19 markers.
Laurel’s Rachael Baker missed the game on a college visit to Gannon, while the sisters tandem of Brooke Dicks and Kristin Dicks were in foul trouble much of the game. Baker averages 7.9 points a contest.
“I think if we had everybody, we could have competed a lot better,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said. “Ellwood is a good Triple-A school, though.
“We had some younger girls get some quality minutes for us.”
Ellen Shaffer paced Laurel (11-6) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Wade was next with eight points. Jessica Conrad also shared team-high honors in rebounds with Shaffer with 10, to go with her two markers.
“I thought Nicole Wade handled herself well and contributed for us.”
The Lady Spartans are in second place in the Section 2-AA standings by a half-game over Mohawk (6-3, 12-3). Laurel returns to action at 7 p.m. today at home against New Brighton (0-9, 1-14).
“Our focus is definitely on section play,” Shevitz said. “We’re looking to build some momentum down the stretch.”
