Mohawk wins at buzzer
Mohawk (54) Vs. New Brighton (52)
Dec 14, 2013
Jonathan Grim knocked down a corner jumper at the buzzer to lift Mohawk to a 54-52 come-from-behind Section 2-AA home victory over New Brighton.

The Warriors (1-0, 3-1) inbounded the ball and raced down the court before getting the ball into the hands of Grim for the game-winner.

“We set up the play and New Brighton had extended pressure,” Mohawk coach Rob Fadden said. “We told the kids we wanted to attack the hoop. The kids did a nice job getting it down the floor and Jonathan did a nice job, because his shot was contested. I’m hoping this is a confidence builder for the team.

“I gotta give our kids credit, because they battled back. I’m very pleased with the fact we didn’t quit.”

Mohawk trailed 27-22 at the half and found itself down nine in the third quarter before outscoring New Brighton (0-1, 2-2) in the fourth quarter.

“We turned the ball over a lot in the first half,” Fadden said. “We had a lot of unforced errors in the first half. They’re definitely things that are correctable. Some of the kids on the court have only played in four varsity games, but they’ve been receptive to what we’ve been teaching them.”

Grim scored all of his game-high 15 points in the second half, including 13 in the pivotal fourth quarter.

“It was big for Jonathan,” Fadden said. “He stepped up when we needed him to.”

Shane McFarland and Zach Shasteen each posted 10 points for Mohawk.

“I’ve talked to them several times about that,” Fadden said. “With the team we have, we’ll have different guys being our leading scorer. If we get other guys chipping in, we’ll be competitive. Shane is just a tough, hard-nosed kid. I thought he did a very good job on defense and did a good job of controlling the game for us.”
