Wilmington cruises to win
Wilmington (87) Vs. Commodore Perry (47)
Dec 12, 2013
Wilmington connected on 12 3-pointers in an easy District 10 nonregion road victory.
Rocco Fagan knocked down five 3-pointers for Wilmington (2-1), while Jordan Smith made four. Spencer DeMedal and Jesse Hilliard also connected on triples.
“We started a little slow,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “They were zoning us and we knew that was going to happen. We struggled with it a little bit early on, but then we shot the lights out. When you hit 12 three’s, that really makes driving the lane available. The lanes were wide open for us tonight after we started making shots from the perimeter.”
The Panthers used a zone to jump out to an early 7-2 lead before Wilmington recovered to take a 19-15 advantage after the first quarter. The Greyhounds stretched their cushion to 39-25 at halftime before outscoring Commodore Perry 48-22 in the second half.
“It’s always nice to get a win especially after a loss,” Jeckavitch said. “We came out kind of lackadaisical. Without a JV game, we didn’t have the same routine. We regrouped and we found our niche pretty quickly.
“We were just too strong for them on both ends of the floor. We created a lot of turnovers and got some easy transition points. We ran the floor well and that’s all created because of our defensive pressure. When you’re making shots on offense, that makes the kids work harder on defense to get the ball back to score more points.”
Smith paced Wilmington with a season- and team-high 27 points, while Fagan added 19. DeMedal was next with 10.
“Everyone played exceptionally well tonight, especially Jordan Smith,” Jeckavitch said. “We had him underneath the basket to begin the game and by the end of the night, we had him out on the perimeter. He was a big key for us tonight. You can’t key on one guy, because we have multiple guys that can score. That’s really nice.”
