The Greyhounds dropped an emotional District 10, Region 2-AA home decision to first-place Lakeview.
Shane McQuiston, a 15-year-old Wilmington sophomore, was killed in an automobile accident Friday night. McQuiston was a member of the Greyhounds’ boys golf team.
“Wilmington dealt with a pretty rough tragedy,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “The guys were playing with heavy hearts for Shane McQuiston.”
Jeckavitch said the gym was packed for the matchup.
“The game was more of a celebration for his life; they had to lock the doors because the gym was so full,” Jeckavitch said. “It was an emotional game and the start of the healing process for everyone.
“It’s hard losing games like that. But it puts life into perspective that there is more to life than a game.”
The Greyhounds (0-2 region, 3-6 overall) turned the ball over just seven times, but couldn’t get anything going offensively.
“We did take care of the ball pretty well,” Jeckavitch said. “Lakeview is one of those teams that will bore you on offense.
“They take two or three minutes off the clock on each possession. Sometimes you force shots offensively; they make you play their style.”
Rocco Fagan netted 13 points for Wilmington and Ryan Brumbaugh was next with 11. Brumbaugh added 11 rebounds as well.
Dalton Boggs tossed in 16 markers to lead the Sailors (3-0, 9-1).
