Beaver Falls blasts Neshannock
Beaver Falls (70) Vs. Neshannock (30)
Feb 03, 2012
Neshannock wasn’t able to sustain its positive momentum from an upset victory in dropping a Section 2-AA road matchup to Beaver Falls.

The win snapped the Lady Tigers’ two-game losing streak and halted the Lady Lancers’ two-game winning streak.

Neshannock (4-5, 8-11) knocked off Riverside to climb into playoff contention last week. However, Beaver Falls’ lopsided win puts the Lady Lancers on the brink of elimination.

New Brighton (6-5, 10-7) holds the fourth and final playoff spot out of the section. The Lady Lions have just one section game left when they host Laurel (3-7, 7-13) on Monday. The Lady Spartans won the first meeting, though, 57-49.

Neshannock must win out against Mohawk (at home), at Laurel and at home against Beaver Falls (7-2, 11-8) and have the Lady Spartans knock off New Brighton to claim the final playoff berth in the section.

“This was disappointing,” Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. “In all my years of coaching, that happens. After a big win, for whatever reason, the girls just aren’t ready to play.

“I really thought we would be able to stay close. This is one of the games you say we’ll forget it and not watch the film.”

Neshannock committed 40 turnovers and was outrebounded, 30-13.

“We got killed on the boards; it just snowballed, period,” Grybowski said. “They pressured us and we couldn’t do anything.

“They kept mixing up the press and we didn’t handle the pressure. They’re quicker and more athletic than we are. We were hesitant. When we did break the press, we’d get one shot and miss. We never got a clear layup.”

Marissa DeMatteo, Madison McHale and Tayler Grybowski netted six points each for the Lady Lancers.

Kiana Law, returning to action after missing the last three games with a knee injury, recorded a game-high 23 points for Beaver Falls.

Neshannock was within 10-8 in the first quarter before the Lady Tigers closed the period on a 9-0 run for a 19-8 margin. Beaver Falls never looked back.

“It just wasn’t pretty from the get-go; it was frustrating,” Luann Grybowski said. “The kids were frustrated. They’re young kids. It’s not easy.”
