Neshannock (70) Vs. Western Beaver (54)
Feb 03, 2009
The table is set for one of the biggest WPIAL Section 1-A matchups of the season.
With Neshannock’s 70-54 win over Western Beaver and Lincoln Park’s loss to Monaca last night, the Lancers will have a chance for a share of the section crown when they travel to Union at 7:30 p.m. Friday. If the Scotties win, they’ll get a share of second place.
Lincoln Park fell to 8-2 after a 67-62 setback to Monaca (4-5), which locked up the fourth playoff spot. Neshannock is 7-2 in the section and 14-6 overall.
Union, which earned a nonsection victory over South Side Beaver last night, is 6-3. The Scotties lost at Neshannock earlier in the season, 76-66.
“We definitely have to come out and play hard,” Neshannock coach John Corey said. “We have to be ready, especially playing there and it being senior night.”
The Lancers came up with a big third quarter to beat the Golden Beavers (1-8, 2-16). Leading 28-25 at intermission, Neshannock outscored Western Beaver 30-20 in the third quarter. Bobby Nittinger scored 15 of his game-high 22 points during the third period.
“It was senior night and I was very pleased to get the win to honor those guys,” Corey said.
“Coming out and jumping out picked up the momentum for us,” Corey said. “In the first half, we shot 8 of 30, so it was good to come out shooting a lot better.”
Tony Kirkwood followed Nittinger with 20, including 10 of 12 from the foul line.
Hunter Creel led Western Beaver with 21 points.
