Mohawk nips Rochester
Mohawk (46) Vs. Rochester (45)
Dec 12, 2008
The wins don’t get much bigger for the Mohawk High basketball team.
Especially this early in the season, not to mention on the road.
The Warriors (4-0) got a strong defensive performance from senior Michael Henry en route to a 46-45 win at Rochester in the WPIAL Section 2-AA opener for both teams.
The Rams (1-2) made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the game appear a bit closer than it was.
Henry limited Rochester’s high-scoring star E.J. Blackwell to 16 points, which drew words of praise from Mohawk coach Kevin Wrona.
“Blackwell might have scored 16, but he worked for all 16,” Wrona said. “I really thought that Michael did a great job on him.
“Things don’t get easier because Tuesday he’s going to be guarding (New Brighton’s) D.J. Pearson.”
Jake Grim led Mohawk with 17 points and Matt Lorello was next with 10. Lorello also had 10 rebounds and Henry seven. Grim had four steals and five assists.
“It was really nice to get that one early,” Wrona said. “You take any win that you can get on the road.”
