Laurel (96) Vs. Northgate (33)
Jan 20, 2017
Mason Mraz was a one-man wrecking crew Friday night.
Mraz fired in a school record 48 points in the Laurel High boys basketball team's 96-33 WPIAL 3-2A rout of visiting Northgate.
The senior broke the previous record of 45 points in a game set by Mike Burkett.
Laurel led 36-8 after one quarter and 61-13 at the half.
Adam Enscoe added 10 points for the Spartans (5-3 section, 12-3 overall).
Mraz scored 13 points in the first quarter, 17 in the second and 18 in the third. He did not play in the fourth.
The senior was 20 of 34 from the floor, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. He also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Although Northgate slipped to 0-8, 4-12 with the defeat, Spartans coach Ken Locke was especially pleased since his team has struggled as of late, losing 2 of 3.
"It was a good game to get back on track," Locke said. "It was just an unforgettable night for Mason. His teammates knew what was going on and they tried to get him the ball.
"Mason did the rest though," he added. "He shot the ball well. I was glad to see this kind of performance because he struggled in our loss to Neshannock (on Tuesday). He had the flu and he still played pretty well, but tonight he just exploded.
"Mason has had a wonderful career. This was a well-deserved honor and he finally got it."
Mraz is closing in on Burkett's record as the school's all-time leading scorer. Burkett scored 1,571 points from 2002-05. Mraz currently has 1,477.
