Slow start dooms Laurel girls

The Laurel High girls basketball team couldn’t get started Saturday and it proved costly.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart scored the game’s first 20 points in a 65-32 nonsection road win over the Lady Spartans.

The Lady Chargers led 17-0 after the first quarter.

“It was our third game of the week and it made some differences,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “We didn’t get off to a great start, either. OLSH is a very good team; we didn’t give our best game.

“There were things about the game that were positive. Our focus now is on going into this week.”

Ellen Shaffer supplied a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Spartans (2-3). Nicole Wade was next with six markers. Kristin Dicks delivered four steals and four assists.

Heidi Langhorst paced all scorers with 20 points for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (3-1).

The Lady Spartans regrouped in the second quarter to outscore the Lady Chargers, 15-13, to trail 30-15 at the break. However, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart pulled away in the second half.

Laurel will attempt to halt a two-game losing streak at 6:30 p.m. today when the team visits Riverside in a WPIAL Section 1-AA contest.
