Feb 09, 2013
Wilmington High built a double-digit halftime lead, then held on for a 61-46 PIAA District 10 Region 2-AA win at Mercer.
“We came out fired up,” said Greyhounds head coach Mike Jeckavitch, whose team improved to 4-6 in the region and 6-12 overall. “We need a little bit of help, but we still have an outside shot at the playoffs.
“We have to win the rest of our games — especially Greenville — but if we can do that, we have a shot at a No. 3 seed.”
The Greyhounds built a 20-15 first-quarter lead, then stretched that to 39-23 by halftime. The second half was virtually even, with the Mustangs outscoring Wilmington 23-22 over the final two frames.
Rocco Fagan paced Wilmington with 14 points, followed by Jordan Smith with 12 and Jesse Hilliard with 10.
Nate Anthony complemented his nine-point performance with a team-high 11 rebounds. Smith snared 10 caroms.
Mercer (3-7, 7-12) got 14 points from Logan Clarke.
“We’ve definitely gotten better as the season’s gone on,” Jeckavitch said. “We struggled early, but we’ve found our place on the court; everybody knows their roles.
“Now it’s not just one individual scoring. On any given night, we’ve got five to 10 people who can step up and score in double figures. We’ve just got to continue that.”
