Marissa Heaney came through in the clutch last night for the Union High girls basketball team.
Heaney split a pair of foul shots with two seconds left to lift the Lady Scots to a 51-50 WPIAL Section 1-A home victory over Rochester.
The win boosts Union (5-4 section, 11-7 overall) into a tie for third place with Aliquippa (5-4, 6-8). The teams are just a half-game behind the second-place Lady Rams (5-3, 8-10).
“This game had a playoff atmosphere,” Lady Scots coach Brian Fadden said. “I’m proud of the effort we gave.
“Playoff teams win these kind of games. We’re not satisfied though. We have to keep moving forward.”
Rochester won the first encounter, 55-27.
Union was up 50-47 with 10 seconds left and fouled the Lady Rams’ Jamie Simon attempting a 3-pointer. Simon drained all three foul shots to tie the game at 50. Heaney came down the other end and was fouled. She hit the first free throw and missed the second for the final margin.
“I’m very proud of the effort from the team,” Fadden said. “The girls really played well; we did what we had to do to get the win.
“It was a total team effort.”
Heaney led all scorers with 19 points and Savannah Partridge was next with 16 markers and seven rebounds. Miranda Heaney, Marissa’s sister, chipped in with 11 points. Allison Bertolino snared seven rebounds.
Miranda Robson tossed in a team-high 17 points for the Lady Rams.
Union outscored the Lady Rams in the third quarter, 14-10, to erase a 24-23 halftime deficit.
