Wilmington girls roll to win
Wilmington (69) Vs. Rocky Grove (34)
Feb 07, 2011
The Wilmington High girls basketball team is on a roll.
The Lady Greyhounds built an 18-point halftime lead and cruised to a District 10 nonregion win over Rocky Grove on Saturday.
Wilmington (11-8) has won four games in a row by a combined 19.5 points.
“This game wasn’t so much for the region (standings) or the playoffs as much as it was for the girls’ morale,” Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford said. “Getting our winning streak to four gives us good momentum because we have a tough stretch the rest of the season.”
Wilmington, which is 5-4 in District 10, Region 2-AA action (fourth place), still has games at first-place Sharpsville tonight (7-1, 15-3), at fifth-place Reynolds (4-5, 8-9) on Feb. 14 and at third-place Greenville (6-3, 10-7) on Feb. 16 to end the regular season.
District 10 takes each region winner for the playoffs. There will possibly be three at-large teams from Region 2-AA qualify as well.
“We have a tough stretch the rest of the season and this run we’re on helps,” Sanford said.
Mackenzie Hiers and Alanna Elliott both netted 14 points to lead the Lady Greyhounds. Hiers snared 10 rebounds as well. Julie Burns was next with 12 markers and a team-best 14 boards.
“Julie and Mackenzie did a great job for us inside on the boards,” Sanford said. “The big thing for us the rest of the way is defense. We have trouble scoring at times and we have to make sure that part of our game is on.”
Haley Marett, Wilmington’s leading scorer at 12 points a game, didn’t play because she was out of town.
Katie Bell tossed in 13 points for the Lady Orioles (4-12).
