Fox fuels Mohawk victory
Mohawk (34) Vs. Neshannock (28)
Kelly Fox came up big in the clutch last night for the Mohawk High girls basketball team.

The junior guard sank 5 of 7 attempts from the foul line in the last two minutes of play to help the Lady Warriors post a 34-28 WPIAL Section 2-AA home victory against Neshannock.

“As far as point guards go, you want the ball in their hands when going to the line at the end with the game on the line,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “She made the foul shots when we needed them.”

Fellow junior guard Alyssa Natale stepped up for the Lady Warriors (4-3 section, 10-5 overall) early on, pouring in 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.

“Alyssa played very well offensively,” O’Lare said. “She carried us there in the first half and when it came down to crunch time she really hit her foul shots.”

Mohawk led 21-17 at the break.

“This is also the first time we’ve beaten Neshannock since I’ve been here and that’s three years,” O’Lare said. “From a program standpoint, it’s a big win for us.”

Natale sank 8 of 8 attempts from the stripe. As a team, Mohawk converted 13 of 17 attempts.

Chelsea Kauffman led the Lady Lancers (1-6, 4-9) with 10 points.

“I thought we battled hard,” Neshannock coach Greg Huston said. “The girls played well and we had some people step up and play hard.”

Said O’Lare, “A lot of people like to go out and watch basketball and they like the up and down, high-scoring games. Good basketball can be played with good defense and good foul shooting. We held them to 28 and we played good defense throughout the game and hit our foul shots down the stretch.”
