Balanced attack fuels Union win over Mohawk
Union (60) Vs. Mohawk (35)
A balanced attack and quick start helped send the Union High boys basketball team to its fourth-straight victory Wednesday night.
Thirteen different Scotties made an impact on the scoreboard as Union bested host Mohawk in a 60-35 nonsection meeting.
Union (9-7) jumped out to a 25-9 lead after the first eight minutes, an advantage it would not relinquish.
“We talked about it in the locker room. We had a nice section win on the road before this game (over Cornell on Tuesday), and we knew they would come out and play hard,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “I liked how we were sharing the ball and moving it. I was pleased with how we did come out. I thought it showed we’ve matured; it was big getting out to that start.”
The Warriors (0-16) fought back and outscoring the Scotties 15-8 in the fourth quarter. That fight was a positive for a Mohawk team still searching for its first victory.
“It’s how we’ve started every game,” Mohawk coach Nick Marmo said. “We’re throwing the ball around, but the kids hung in there and kept fighting. We came out in the second half, had a little bit better energy. They’re a good group of kids to be around. Hopefully, we can get one of these games.”
Garrison Bell paced Union with 10 points, while Mohawk’s Parker Lyons posted a game-high 12 points.
