Wilmington squanders big lead in OT loss
Reynolds (62) Vs. Wilmington (59)
The Wilmington High boys basketball team let one slip away last night.
The host Greyhounds squandered a 15-point fourth-quarter lead with six minutes to go in dropping a 62-59 District 10, Region 2-AA matchup to Reynolds in overtime.
Wilmington (6-3 region, 11-8 overall) led 40-28 after three quarters.
“We just played undisciplined basketball,” Greyhounds coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “When you have the game in hand with six minutes to go, you expect to make good decisions with the ball and we didn’t do that (last night).
“We missed three front-ends of a one-and-one and a back-end of a one-and-one in the fourth quarter. That’s not going to cut it. We didn’t make enough defensive stops, either.”
The Greyhounds pushed the ball up the floor down by three points in overtime, but Jesse Hilliard’s half-court heave at the buzzer was off the mark.
Wilmington led 25-15 at the half. The Greyhounds were just 5 of 12 at the foul line, compared to 12 of 21 for Reynolds.
Spencer DeMedal notched a team-high 16 points for the Greyhounds and Jordan Smith was next with 15. Rocco Fagan followed with 14.
Corey Woods led all scorers with 19 markers for the Raiders (6-4, 13-5).
Wilmington holds a half-game lead over Reynolds for second place in the region. West Middlesex sits atop the region at 8-0, 12-6.
