Aliquippa outlasts Union girls in overtime
Aliquippa (76) Vs. Union (63)
Overtime wasn’t kind to the Union High girls basketball team last night.
Aliquippa held the Lady Scots to one point in the extra session in claiming a 76-63 WPIAL Section 1-A victory.
“We played as well as we could have for three-and-a-half quarters. Then their natural talent and athleticism took over,” Union coach Brian Fadden said. “We ran out of gas. But I was proud of our effort.
“We’ve made a lot of improvements and they are showing on the floor. We just have to keep moving forward.”
Union held an eight-point lead with five minutes to go in regulation.
The Lady Quips (2-0 section, 3-2 overall) held the ball for the final 50 seconds of regulation to get the final shot. But Union played strong defense and Aliquippa missed about a 15-footer at the horn, sending the teams to overtime.
The Lady Quips suffocated Union’s offensive attack in overtime to earn the win.
“It was disappointing with the ending, but our kids battled,” Fadden said. “You can’t keep good teams like Aliquippa down forever. They showed why they’re good late in the game.”
Marissa Heaney and Savannah Partridge paced the Lady Scots with 16 points apiece. Hannah Booth chipped in with 10.
Partridge contributed 10 rebounds and five assists, while Miranda Heaney, Marissa’s sister, handed out five assists. Allison Bertolino pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
“Marissa and Savannah played very well offensively; they both played very unselfish games,” Fadden said.
