Lady Lancers top Wilmington
Neshannock (63) Vs. Wilmington (46)
Jan 20, 2014
The host Lady Lancers limited the Lady Greyhounds to 17 second-half points in a nonconference win in the “Battle of the Border”.

Wilmington (10-4) held a 29-26 lead at the half.

“Defensively, we played much better in the second half,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “That’s our goal, to keep teams at 10 points or less a quarter. Wilmington is a nice team.”

Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford noted her team’s struggles in the second half.

“I think it was mostly the way we played in the second half and poor shooting, too,” Sanford said. “We just kind of shut down mentally in the second half. Physically, we were still hustling. It wasn’t necessarily that we played that poorly. We did get a little lazy on defense.

“We had a really good first half of the season. Now the last four games, we haven’t played our game.”

The Lady Lancers’ Madison McHale poured in a game-high 32 points, 14 coming in the third quarter. She netted all four of her 3-pointers in that frame. McHale also registered six rebounds and three steals.

“She is playing through a sore shoulder and she’s being a leader on the floor. That’s nice to see,” Grybowski said.

Tayler Grybowski, the coach’s daughter, was next with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Cassidy Burrelli contributed 10 markers, six boards and three assists.

Neshannock (16-0) capped a 3-0 week with the win. Included in the stretch were Section 2-AA wins over Laurel (53-52) and Mohawk (39-37).

“This is a tough time to get through, this last third of the year,” Luann Grybowski said. “I’m really happy for the kids. They’ve been through some adversity these last couple of years. It’s nice to see them have the success that they deserve.”

Hannah Drake delivered a team-high 16 points for Wilmington and Tessa Sikora supplied 11 points and 11 boards. Drake scored 10 of her points in the first half.
