Union girls’ first victory comes in section opener
Union (51) Vs. Beaver County Christian (32)
The Union High girls basketball team earned its first victory last night.
And the Lady Scots’ 51-32 win over Beaver County Christian came in WPIAL Section 1-A play.
“We’re in first place and at the top of the standings, so that’s a good thing,” said first-year coach Damian Cassano, who collected his first win as a coach.
Union (1-0 section, 1-2 overall) led 19-17 lead at the half, but pulled away in the second half by outscoring the Lady Eagles, 32-15.
“We came out flat, but the girls responded well,” Cassano said. “I have to give them credit for coming out and doing what needed to be done.
“We definitely stepped up in the second half. It was a good win and a good way to start in the section.”
Bridget Boyles paced the Lady Scots with 19 points and six steals. Savannah Partridge followed with 18 markers and seven steals.
“Bridget’s been pretty solid all three games,” Cassano said. “Right now she’s our hot hand. Savannah, being a freshman, had a great game. It’s the type of game that can get her confidence up.
“Everyone has given a solid effort. If someone isn’t scoring, someone else steps up on defense or in other areas.”
Taryn Wright led Union in rebounds with 10 and Ashley Sankey grabbed nine rebounds.
