Union earns ‘big win’ over Cornell
Union (57) Vs. Cornell (47)
The Union High boys basketball team took a big step toward reaching the postseason last night.
The host Scotties boasted four players in double figures in knocking off Cornell in a WPIAL Section 1-A contest, 57-47.
Union (5-3 section, 8-8 overall) climbed into a second-place tie with the Raiders (5-3, 9-6) with four league games remaining. The top four teams advance to the WPIAL playoffs. The teams split the season series with Cornell winning the first matchup, 57-45.
“This was just a good team effort,” Scotties coach Mark Stanley said. “It was a big win for us.
“If we can take care of our home business and get a couple of wins on the road, we have a good shot at finishing in second place in the section. Second place is in our hands.”
Sewickley Academy (8-0, 15-0), which is ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, sits in first place in the section standings.
Cornell Charles collected a team-high 18 points for Union and Anthony Rush was next with 14. Garrison Bell contributed 12 tallies with six rebounds. Jullian Johnson added 11 markers.
Dominick Dudo pulled down six rebounds for the winners.
“Four guys in double figures is what really stepped it up for us,” Stanley said. “Our ball movement was much crisper.”
Dane Jackson led the Raiders with 22 points. Devin Hines, who tossed in 26 points in the first meeting, was held to just four markers.
“Jullian did a great job on Hines,” Stanley said. “Jullian always plays hard; he’s a strong kid.”
