Wilmington girls lose OT heart-breaker
Sharon (58) Vs. Wilmington (56)
The Wilmington High girls basketball team was able to hold a lead for most of the second half.

The host Lady Greyhounds, though, weren’t able to hold it through the final buzzer, dropping a 58-56 decision to District 10, Region 2-AA opponent Sharon in overtime last night.

Wilmington (1-5 region, 5-11 overall) led by five points with three minutes remaining in regulation, but key mistakes helped the Lady Tigers mount a comeback. An offensive board and a putback layup with 20 seconds left tied the game and a Wilmington shot to end it didn’t fall.

Sharon is coached by former New Castle High and Westminster College standout Maria Joseph.

“Down the stretch late, we stopped running our offense,” Wilmington coach Matt Fabian said. “We got into a hurry for no reason. We took some bad shots, turned the ball over and they got easy shots. Next thing we know, it’s tied.”

Sharon (4-1, 9-5) outscored Wilmington 8-6 in the extra quarter to take the victory.

“We’re not used to playing with a lead late,” Fabian said. “I put that towards inexperience, but these are the games we need in order to get over that hump. I couldn’t be happier with the way they played. We played well against Neshannock and it was a good test for what we would see tonight.”

Hannah Drake led the Lady ’Hounds with 20 points and six steals. Jenna Peoples tallied 13 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks.

“She came off the bench, she stepped up and she relished the role,” Fabian said of Peoples. “This was the game I was waiting for her. I hope this springboards her, her potential is unbelievable.”
