Lady ’Canes get ‘big win’ over Blackhawk
New Castle (69) Vs. Blackhawk (56)
The New Castle High girls basketball team started a grueling week on a positive note last night.

Kaylynn Waters scored 25 points and Christina Talbert added 24 to lead the Lady ’Canes to a 69-56 WPIAL Section 2-AAA win over Blackhawk at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.

New Castle (2-0 section, 5-3 overall) is ranked No. 3 in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The defending WPIAL Class AAA champion Lady Cougars (2-1, 6-1) are ranked No. 2.

“It was one of those games where we had to hold serve and win at home,” Lady ’Canes coach Jason Rankin said. “We know Blackhawk is a dangerous team; it was a big win for us.

“If you can win the games at home, you can have no worse than a tie then with that team in the standings.”

New Castle doesn’t get much time to enjoy the victory. The Lady ’Canes return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at top-ranked and section rival Hopewell (3-0, 9-0).

“We don’t want to get too high from this win,” Rankin said. “We circled the calendar for the Hopewell game when the schedule came out.

“This is a monster section and we have to be prepared; it should be a good one.”

The Lady ’Canes forged a 29-25 halftime lead and the Lady Cougars cut it to 43-41 after three quarters. But New Castle outscored the guests, 26-15, in the fourth frame to pull away.

Talbert netted 12 of her points in the fourth period and Waters contributed eight.

“They really helped close the door for us,” Rankin said of Waters and Talbert.

Kelsey Scott chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winners, while Dana Perrotta added nine markers.

“We had a great game,” Rankin said. “All seven of our players contributed and I was happy with that.”

Chassidy Omogrosso paced the Lady Cougars with 20 points.

Waters was honored before the game with a game ball for surpassing the 1,000-point plateau against Gateway last month.
