New Castle was able to conquer Youngstown Ursuline’s size in a nonsection win.
The Fighting Irish (9-4) boast such length in DeVonte Jenkins (6-foot-6), Jalen Lowe (6-9) and Kevin Jackson (6-4). The Red Hurricane (11-5) outscored Ursuline, 22-13, in the second quarter for a 34-22 halftime advantage.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the guys,” ’Canes coach Ralph Blundo said. “When you look out on the floor, we looked completely overmatched. They’re a very good basketball team.
“To come into Youngstown and beat a team as talented as them really says a lot for our team.”
Corey Eggleston led a balanced attack for New Castle with 26 points. Shawn Anderson was next with 15 markers, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals for the winners, while Brandon Domenick tossed in 13 points with seven assists.
Johnny Matarazzo contributed five rebounds for the ’Canes and Malik Hooker added four steals.
Khiree Gregory notched a team-high 20 points for the Fighting Irish and Jenkins was next with 12.
New Castle hosts Beaver in a Section 2-AAA matchup at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The ’Canes won the first meeting, 66-46.
“The last time we played them it was a physical game,” Blundo said. “They’re one of those teams that can beat anyone.
“We have to go in with the same focus and the same intensity against Beaver that we’ve went out with the last couple of weeks.”
