Ellwood comes up short
Ellwood City (62) Vs. Summit Academy (63)
Jan 15, 2011
Ellwood City was a long rebound away from snapping Summit Academy’s seven-game winning streak and winning a crucial Section 2-AA game 63-62.
The Knights (5-1, 8-4) trailed by one and were on the free-throw line with six seconds left in the game. Summit Academy missed both free throws, but the second shot bounced high off the rim and the Knights’ Derek Banks corralled the rebound and a hit a jumper with three seconds left. A last-second heave by Ellwood City (3-2, 6-6) fell short.
“We had them the whole time and they made a run,” Wolverines coach Al Campman said. “We’re still learning how to win, and I think we’ll get it done.”
Ellwood City’s Gino Ceriani led all scorers with 20 points, while Ryan Horgan added 14 and Matt Germanoski 11. The Knights had four players in double figures, led by Arley Townsend’s 16.
Campman was impressed with Germanoski, whose 11 points was a season high and one point away from his career best.
“Germanoski played a great game for us,” Campman said. “He really stepped up.”
